Protection is only effective when it focuses on stronger forms of agricultural nature management or reserve management, implemented in large, contiguous core areas. Open, wet, and herb-rich grasslands, where agricultural activities take into account the presence of nests and chicks and promote food availability (especially insects for the chicks), are key to successful conservation.
Consumers can choose dairy products that are produced with respect for nature and meadow birds. You can find a list here or ask for these products at your supermarket.
Farmers can find information here on how they can contribute (e.g., raising water levels and delaying mowing).
Policymakers can work to restructure the agricultural system in the Netherlands and Europe. Instead of continuing down the path of further industrializing rural areas, efforts should focus on finding a balance between nature and higher-quality food production.
